🛰️ What does a weather satellite do?Satellites watch huge parts of Earth at once. Meteorologists use them to follow clouds, moisture, storm growth, cloud-top temperatures and large weather systems that cannot be seen from one ground station.
🌎 Why does GOES seem to stay in one place?GOES is geostationary. It orbits above the equator at the same rate Earth rotates, so it keeps watching the same broad part of the planet.
👀 GeoColorDuring daylight it looks similar to a view from space. At night it blends infrared information with a reference layer of city lights so clouds remain visible.
🌡️ InfraredInfrared senses emitted energy and lets meteorologists estimate cloud-top temperatures even at night. Very cold cloud tops can be a clue that thunderstorms have grown very tall.
💧 Water VaporWater-vapor imagery highlights moisture patterns in the atmosphere. Meteorologists use those patterns to follow upper-level winds, dry air and ingredients that can help storms develop.
